“They ignored the warning of the Monkey God and were slaughtered in their sleep after a wild night of drinking.”Thus begins the tale of the Chu family history, which follows the adventures of my great-grandfather, Ah Tai, from southern China to the goldfields of Borneo. It is 1850 and, at the age of 20, his impoverished circumstances hold little prospect of improvement. Lured perhaps by tales of fortune and adventure, or forced by necessity (for rumour has it that he killed a Manchu officer), he sets sail for the south; to the island of Borneo. Whatever the reason, he will never return, nor hear from his family again.
