A PORTRAIT OF COURAGE
Many believe that the battle of Acoma in 1599 was the tragic turning point for the Spanish colonists and the Puebloan people, fighting to maintain their freedom from the injustice of Spanish colonial rule. Several years earlier, the Spanish expedition had been formed under the leadership of the indomitable Juan de Oņate, when he had been appointed by the Crown as Adelantado and Captain General of the pending conquest of New Mexico.
Through the eyes of the poet-Captain Gaspar de Villagrá, we follow the path of Virgils poem, the Aeneid, when he reveals the difficult birth of the expedition, the many hardships and deaths encountered on the trail from Zacatecas to New Mexico, and the dissent among the harried but courageous members. His enchantment with a remarkable and striking Puebloan maiden, Doņa Inez, reveals the determination of the native people. The daring Inez leads him, Sybil-like, on an incredible journey through this new world filled with mysterious communities and illusive cultures. Although fate makes them enemies, he comes to understand the resolute people who fought the desperate, but justified revolt on the high cliffs of Acoma against the heavily-armed invaders |
